Woodworking Introduction

In this fun packed workshop, you’ll learn the techniques that underpin consistent quality and confidence for working in wood. You will have first hand experience in sharpening and tool maintenance, as well as developing an understanding of the accurate laying out skills required for cutting and fitting your project components to make a mallet.

Three handmade timber mallets with cork faces.

At the outset we will explore how to maintain keen cutting edges of the chisels and hand planes, for optimum hand tool results. You will then be guided through the process of using layout and hand tools to cut the mortise and tenon joinery and then learn how to remove material for accurate shaping, fitting and detailing. You will learn about abrasives and finishing to complete your mallet to take home for future use.

This course offers the hand tool skills needed to build confidence and understanding to work with timber, with a maximum of four students for individual attention and sharing amongst the group. It covers the foundational knowledge and precision approach that underpins the craft of furniture making, skills that can be applied to your future workshop projects.
