Furniture Design Development

This new course will enable you to develop and realise your design idea. You will be able to test your concept by building a full scale model - which can be taken home to consider for further refinement.

Suitable for students who have previously taken a course at the studio.

Bring along your design inspiration, sketches and images for an achievable, moderate sized piece of wooden cabinetry or stool. You will be guided through the process of developing your idea at full scale through a process of full scale orthographic drawing along with a component cutting list. Together we will explore the structural and aesthetic elements for successful resolution of each project with appropriate jointing options, then build it in construction grade timber. As time allows we can develop finished timber and joinery samples to inform the ongoing process.

You will then be able to take your full scale model home for in-situ testing and reflection to enable any additional modifications. A further five day course can then be scheduled to enable you to realise your final design in your chosen materials.

This course offers a detailed, customised approach needed to build confidence and understanding to work with timber - with a maximum of four students for individual attention and sharing amongst the group. It covers the foundational knowledge and precision approach that underpins the craft of furniture making, skills that can be applied to your future workshop projects.
